Following a years-long investigation, D.C. Attorney General Karl A. Racine filed a consumer protection lawsuit against four of the world’s biggest oil companies — ExxonMobil, BP, Chevron, and Shell — for misleading consumers about the role their products play in causing climate change.

“For decades, these oil and gas companies spent millions to mislead consumers and discredit climate science in pursuit of profits,” Racine said in a statement. 

The lawsuit says the companies violated D.C.’s consumer protection law by engaging in misleading acts and practices around the marketing, promotion, and sale of fossil fuel products
