NEWARK - “Governor Murphy: Now it’s your turn.” That’s the message more than 20 current and former state elected officials and 70 state and national advocacy groups signed in a full-page ad in The Star-Ledger today, urging the Murphy administration to take legal action against Exxon for lying about climate change and the damage they caused.

Last week the City of Hoboken sued ExxonMobil and other Big Oil companies to hold them accountable for defrauding the public about climate change harms they knew their products would cause. Just yesterday the City of Charleston, South Carolina, filed a similar lawsuit, the 21st community in the nation to do so.

This summer, a New Jersey Senate committee approved bipartisan Senate Resolution 57, which calls on Murphy and Attorney General Grewal “to pursue legal action against fossil fuel companies for damages caused by climate change.” Several local governments, including the Boards of Chosen Freeholders of Union and Atlantic counties, and the council boroughs of Bradley Beach and Sea Bright, have passed similar resolutions in recent months.

The signatories of today’s ad include:

  • Former Governor Richard Codey
  • 2 State Senators
  • 4 Assembly Members
  • 5 Mayors
  • 2 County Freeholders
  • 2 Council Presidents
  • 7 Municipal Council Members
