WASHINGTON, D.C. —  ExxonMobil today announced a $60 billion deal to acquire Pioneer Natural Resources, which would vastly expand its oil and gas production in the Permian Basin to more than 1.3 million barrels a day. The announcement comes as the oil giant faces a growing number of lawsuits seeking to hold the company  accountable for lying to the public about its products’ role in the climate crisis.

Richard Wiles, president of the Center for Climate Integrity, released the following statement:

“ExxonMobil is planning to ramp up its climate pollution while continuing to lie to the public and policymakers about its so-called commitment to solutions. Big Oil companies are driving the world toward climate catastrophe, and as the crisis accelerates, it’s more important than ever that officials call out their climate deception and hold these polluters accountable."
