SACRAMENTO — A new California ad campaign, Making Polluters Pay, is highlighting stories of real people who have faced devastating harm from raging wildfires, extreme heat waves, and outrageous gas prices while major oil companies rake in billions and fuel climate disasters.

Some of the stories told in the seven-figure TV and digital buy from the Center for Climate Integrity include:

  • Ricardo, a full-time driver in Los Angeles whose livelihood has been threatened by higher gas prices

  • The Howes, a family who lost their home and community in Klamath River during the McKinney Fire

  • Zion, a 7-year-old boy in Los Angeles who has been hospitalized for his asthma three times in the last year amid extreme heat waves

While these Californians suffered, major oil and gas companies raked in some of their highest profits ever, including $29 billion for Chevron, $11 billion for Marathon, and $8 billion for Valero in 2022. The entire oil and gas industry has made more than $300 billion in profits in the first nine months of 2022, according to one estimate

The new ads call for holding these polluters accountable and making them pay for the damage they’ve caused.
