Susan Fisher

State Representative

Buncombe County, North Carolina

Susan Fisher is a seventh generation native of Asheville. She comes from a family of involved citizens. Susan’s mom is a past president of the Democratic Women of Buncombe. She herself is a mother of two and grandmother of two!

Susan is a graduate of Asheville High School. She attended Mars Hill College, majoring in English and Spanish and holds an Audiology and Speech Pathology degree from the University of Maryland. Fisher worked as a legislative correspondent in the Washington, D.C. offices of the late Congressman James McClure Clarke and began to learn about the political sphere and how a person could advocate through government for the good of the people.

In 2004, tapped by her party to fulfill the late Senator Martin Nesbitt’s term in the State House, Susan stepped up to the challenge with energy and a solid background of service. Prior to that time she had served on the Asheville City Schools Board of Education as chair, and then went on to be Executive Director of Kids Voting Buncombe County.

In the 2014 biennium Susan Fisher was selected to be Deputy Democratic Leader of the North Carolina House of Representatives. In 2021, Susan is serving as Minority Whip in her ninth term in the North Carolina House.
